A stranger held my gaze today. Not in passing, not the polite glance we offer at grocery store lines or elevator doors. This was different. It lingered. Not confrontational, not flirtatious. Just… still. And I panicked.

I don’t think we talk enough about how unsettling it is to be truly seen. Eye contact, when it lingers past the social script, becomes a kind of mirror. It feels like someone might catch a glimpse of the parts we’re still unsure about. The version of us that doesn’t know all the answers, the flicker of sadness we haven’t named yet, or the quiet longing we hide behind composure.

My instinct was to look away.

But I didn’t. I held the gaze. And it stirred something I can’t fully name yet. I walked away with my heartbeat too loud in my chest. Not because I was afraid of them, but because, for a brief moment, I wondered if they saw me before I did.

According to a 2007 study by Hietanen et al., prolonged eye contact activates areas of the brain associated with emotional processing and social cognition.⁴ It makes us more aware—of others, but especially of ourselves. That’s why it feels so vulnerable. Eye contact isn’t just perception; it’s recognition.

It reminded me how often I perform presence without offering it. I show up with my body, smile on cue, nod at the right moments. But am I truly there? Or am I curating who I think I should be in that space?

There was a time when I thought invisibility was safer. If no one looked too closely, they couldn’t judge what they didn’t understand. But what I didn’t realize is that hiding has a cost: we start to believe we are the version we pretend to be.

Even now, there’s a part of me that flinches at the idea of being seen—not because I don’t want to be known, but because the fear of being judged still lives in me. What if they misunderstand the silence? What if they assign meaning to something I’m still figuring out?

It’s easier to be the observer. The quiet one in the room, scanning the dynamics, knowing more about others than they know about you. But every now and then, someone catches you off guard. They don’t just notice your presence—they look for you. And you find yourself wanting to be found, even if just a little.

There is still a part of me learning how to let others witness my becoming. I don’t always feel brave enough to hold eye contact with the world. But I’m trying. Trying to let my guard down without needing the perfect words. Trying to believe that I don’t have to have it all figured out to be worth seeing.

So eye contact—unfiltered and undesigned—is terrifying. But maybe it’s also healing. It offers a kind of accountability to our inner self. A nudge that says, “Hey, I’m still here. Look at me.”

I don’t want to perform my existence anymore. I want to live it. Which means being seen, even when I’m not polished. Even when I’m uncertain. Even when my eyes betray the steadiness my voice tries to fake.

And maybe that’s the gift of today. A moment that didn’t ask for anything but honesty. Not even words. Just a willingness to not look away.

Day 9 – Growing Pains – Alessia Cara

Dearest Diary,

There are things I’ve clearly outgrown. The obvious ones: old clothes, outdated habits, people who spoke to the smallest parts of me. But what’s harder to admit are the things I’ve outgrown that I still carry anyway. Like the need to explain myself all the time. Like the silent shame that comes with saying “no.” Like the fear that if I don’t earn love, I won’t deserve it.

Today, I found myself apologizing in a conversation I didn’t need to apologize for. The words slipped out before I could even catch them. It made me think about how long I’ve been rehearsing these habits. How early I started fine-tuning myself to make others comfortable. Even now, I shrink a little without realizing it. I adjust my tone, smile when I’m not okay, become smaller so someone else can feel big. And I hate it. Because I also love that I care. I just don’t want that care to come at the cost of myself anymore.

Some of these tendencies are deeply rooted. They were survival strategies once. According to Young et al. (2003), schema modes like the “compliant surrenderer” or the “overcontroller” develop as protective patterns—we adapt early to avoid rejection, criticism, or abandonment. But when we grow, those same strategies become heavy. We carry them even when they no longer serve us.

I used to think letting go meant completely shedding something. But maybe letting go is more like loosening a grip. Like walking with something until one day you set it down, not because you’re forced to, but because you no longer need it. That’s where I am with a lot of my coping mechanisms. I see them now. I name them. And slowly, I challenge them.

When someone told me recently that I “seemed so calm all the time,” I smiled, but a part of me winced. Calm isn’t always peace. Sometimes it’s just emotional restraint in a world that never asked how loud I could be. But that same world taught me to believe calm meant good. So I wore it like armor. And now I’m tired of being so well put together that I can’t fall apart when I need to.

I don’t want to hold it all so tightly anymore. I want to make space. For joy that doesn’t have to be earned. For anger that isn’t punished. For softness that isn’t hidden.

And I don’t want to demonize what got me here, either. I needed those patterns once. They protected me. They helped me be safe, accepted, and survive environments I didn’t know how to navigate. So I don’t aim to erase them in shame—I want to honor them by evolving beyond them. I still want to be what I needed when I was younger. And some days, I wonder if that version of me could see who I’ve become, maybe we’d both feel a little more whole. That thought carries comfort, even if I know I’m still learning. Still unlearning. There are places I may have overcorrected, habits I’ve misunderstood, moments I’ve surely messed up. But even in that, maybe growth isn’t linear. Maybe it’s layered. Looped. Forgiving.

Maybe that’s the work of growing up: not just outgrowing what we once needed, but being kind to ourselves while we learn how to live without it.

Day 8 – Cellophane – FKA Twigs

Dearest Diary,

I used to think I was being kind by listening. Holding space. Nodding, asking questions, keeping my own stories small so someone else could stretch out in the spotlight. But kindness, I’m learning, is not the same as disappearing.

It hit me today, how tired I feel in conversations that revolve around other people’s chaos. How I’ve learned to laugh in the right places, offer comfort like a reflex, mirror back pain that isn’t mine. How I’ve become so fluent in absorbing that I forget to check if I’m even okay.

It’s not that I resent listening. It’s that somewhere along the way, I confused being safe with being silent. I learned to be good at reading rooms and adjusting myself accordingly, especially when I was younger. To avoid conflict. To be helpful. To earn affection. It became muscle memory: listen, understand, hold it in.

But what happens when there’s no room left inside?

There’s a kind of loneliness that grows in the presence of others. When your role is to receive but never to be received. When you are always the page and never the pen. Some people don’t even notice they’re writing their whole story on you.

Today I caught myself smiling during a conversation, nodding along, and yet I was somewhere else entirely. Not bored. Just… empty. I didn’t want to offer advice. I didn’t want to perform understanding. I just wanted someone to say, “Hey, you look tired. What’s going on with you?”

But people don’t ask questions they assume you can handle alone.

I want to unlearn that.

I want softness to go both ways. To be allowed mess. To be held.

Not just heard, but known.

I read recently that emotional over-functioning is common among people who learned early on to avoid rocking the boat. Those of us who were praised for being mature beyond our years often carry the unspoken burden of holding things together — for our families, our friends, our partners. But it’s a cost that builds slowly. A kind of self-neglect disguised as compassion.

There’s a psychological concept called “compassion fatigue.” It’s often used to describe caretakers and trauma workers, but I wonder if it applies more broadly to those of us who are always ‘on call’ emotionally. We forget to distinguish between helping and self-erasing. Between support and self-silencing.

The truth is, I’m not made of glass. But some days, I feel transparent — like people can see their own reflection in me but never quite see me.

Maybe today, I just needed to write it down. To remind myself I exist, even when no one is asking.

And maybe one day, when someone tells me a story that’s heavy, I’ll have the courage to say, “Can we pause for a moment? I’m carrying a few things too.” Maybe one day I’ll stop rehearsing empathy and start practicing it inward. Not as a performance. But as a promise.

Because they do. Strangers on benches. Coworkers on break. Friends in distress. I’ve always been the one they turn to. The one who nods at the right times, remembers the details, connects the dots.

It’s not that I mind. There’s something beautiful about being trusted. About someone feeling safe enough to unravel in front of you. And yet — there’s a cost no one really talks about.

It’s the quiet ache of being everyone’s container but no one’s priority.

People pour into me — their stories, their fears, their messes — and when they’re emptied out, they leave lighter. I stay behind, holding what they couldn’t. I call it kindness. Empathy. Being a good friend. But some nights, like tonight, I feel the heaviness of it.

And it makes me question: when did my presence become a utility?

Maybe I’ll learn to build boundaries that still feel like warmth. Maybe I’ll stop apologizing for needing reciprocity.

There’s a part of me that wants to disappear when things get too close.

It’s subtle. A pulling back. A disappearing act dressed up as self-preservation. Sometimes I convince myself it’s maturity. Sometimes I call it peace. But more often than not, it’s fear dressed up as wisdom.

Today, I noticed the old pattern stir again. A message left unanswered. A warmth I didn’t return. Not because I didn’t want to, but because somewhere inside, I flinched first.

I’ve done this for so long I almost forgot it was a choice.

I tell myself I don’t need people. That I’ve become too good at being alone. That softness makes me vulnerable. But the truth is, somewhere in my past, my nervous system learned to protect itself by staying one step removed. It memorized a script: don’t get too close, don’t ask for too much, don’t show your need.

The kind of person who fills a room without hesitation — who never has to explain they belong there.

I tried to wear that version like armor. I thought maybe the right words, the right volume, the right delivery would make me feel less invisible, less misunderstood. But no matter how I adjusted the shape of my voice, it never felt like it truly fit. It always felt borrowed.

The truth is, I’m quieter by nature — or maybe by choice.
And for a long time, I thought that meant something was wrong with me.

I remember once, in a room full of people all speaking over each other, I stayed silent for a long while. Not out of fear — but because I was watching. Weighing what felt real.
And someone turned to me and said, half-laughing, “You’re too quiet. Say something, will you?”

What they didn’t realize is that silence was me saying something.
But because it wasn’t loud, it wasn’t heard.

It’s not about bottling things up. It’s about discerning what, when, and to whom we give emotional access.

And maybe that’s what I’ve been practicing all along:
Not silence out of fear, but quiet as a form of self-protection.

But it’s still lonely sometimes.

Because people often misread quietness.
They confuse it with weakness. Or indifference. Or insecurity.
They see the absence of a raised voice and assume there’s nothing underneath it.

What they don’t see is the storm that has already been weathered before the words ever reach the surface.

There have been days when I wanted to speak up — not to be heard, but to be understood.
And still, I held it.
Because I’ve learned that some people listen only to respond, not to receive.
And some silences are kinder than the truth they’d reject.

There’s a cost to that, though.
To always being the one who filters.
To being the emotional buffer in the room — soft enough to absorb tension, quiet enough to be dismissed.
It builds up, invisibly.
It teaches you to brace.

But today, for the first time in a while, I didn’t feel like I had to explain my restraint.
I didn’t second-guess it.
I didn’t feel like I owed anyone the noise they were expecting.

I just… held the space.
Let the tension pass through without letting it settle.
Chose my softness — again — as a conscious act.

And in that, I felt something close to sovereignty.
Not control over others, but clarity over myself.

Quiet doesn’t mean I’ve lost my voice.
It means I’ve stopped offering it up to people who don’t know how to hear it.

Day 3 – This Is Me Trying — Taylor Swift

Dearest Diary,
The day’s end, another moment to reflect.

Sometimes I wish people saw me the way I see myself — quiet, observant, always trying to make sense of things before reacting to them.

But more often, I get cast as the extrovert. The good listener. The emotionally available one. The steady space others feel safe pouring into.

And I don’t mind it… until I realize how rarely the flow is reversed.

Sometimes I walk away from conversations feeling heavier than when I entered them — like I’ve just inherited someone else’s grief or frustration, while mine stayed folded in the corner, untouched.

It’s strange being seen so much by others, and yet still feeling unseen.

They admire your calm, your patience, your ability to carry things — but rarely ask if you’re tired of carrying.

And I don’t always know how to say it without sounding ungrateful.
I like being someone others can turn to.
I like being someone people feel comfortable with.

But sometimes, I just want someone to turn toward me and ask first.

Trying not to disappear.
Trying to hold my own without needing to hold everyone else at the same time.
Trying to be real in a world that often praises performance.

And maybe that’s what I’m still learning — that I don’t have to disappear to protect my softness. That I can be seen and still choose who gets to know the whole story.

Today wasn’t particularly loud or heavy. But it left a mark — the kind you don’t notice until the end of the day, when your shoulders ache and you realize it’s not from posture. It’s from the weight of being perceived.

Day 2 – Someone New — Hozier

Dearest Diary,
The day’s end, another moment to reflect.

It happens quietly.
They meet someone new — and just like that, the conversations thin out.
Texts taper.
Plans shift.
Invitations stop arriving.

I don’t blame them. I really don’t.

But I still notice.

Some part of me always notices.

It’s not that I expect to be prioritized. It’s more the way the shift happens — subtly, like a house settling after everyone’s left. One day, we’re talking about weekend plans or bad coffee or how exhausted work made us. The next, their replies feel half-finished. Delayed. Shorter. They start saying “we” instead of “I.” Then… silence.

And in that silence, something familiar stirs.

I’ve never learned how to say, “This makes me feel left behind.”
So instead, I pull back. Smoothly. Preemptively. Like it was my decision all along.

It’s not bitterness. It’s more like… bracing.

There’s a memory I return to more often than I realize.
Years ago, I watched a friend disappear into their new life — dinners with their partner’s friends, couple trips, double dates. I waited at first. Then I excused it. Then I disappeared, so they wouldn’t have to.

I told myself it was mature. That I was giving them space.

That lyric always made me think of romance. But lately, it feels more like a social truth.
Most people are tender when they’re aligned. But when paths diverge? We don’t know how to carry people forward. So we leave them without confrontation. We ghost in slow motion.

I do it too. I know that.

There’s a term in psychology called “protective disengagement.”
It’s when someone begins to emotionally disconnect before a relationship fully ruptures. Usually out of fear. Anticipated rejection. Perceived abandonment. It’s a defense mechanism — not cruelty (Pistole, 2010)¹.

So maybe I’m not cold.
Maybe I’m just preparing.
Preparing not to be missed.
Preparing to not miss.

I think I learned early on that saying “this hurts” doesn’t always protect you.
But vanishing first might.

Still, I wonder who I’d be if I didn’t have to keep doing that.

What if I had stayed? What if I had asked, instead of assuming?

What if there was a version of me that could say:

“I know things are different now. But I still want to be in your life, if there’s space.”

But that version of me — they’re not here yet.
Maybe someday.

For now, I just step back quietly and try not to be noticed doing it.

Dearest Diary,
The day’s end, another moment to reflect.

They say everyone wants a do-over. Not because they hate who they’ve become — but because they wish they’d arrived here sooner. I don’t think that’s true for everyone… but maybe, quietly, it’s true for me.

This space — Pandora’s Curio — wasn’t built for attention. It was built to let things out. Gently. Privately. Like smoke through a cracked window. Most of the time, no one even noticed it existed. But now, for reasons I’m still figuring out, I’m ready to let it be seen — not for validation, just… to let it breathe.

There’s a line in Start Again that always gets me:

“Can I just turn back the clock and forgive myself for the mess I made?”

It’s not theatrical. It’s not dramatic. It’s the kind of quiet question you only ask yourself when no one else is around to hear the answer. And maybe that’s what this post is — a soft way of saying, “I’m still here. I’m still trying.”

I’ve learned (and keep relearning) that self-forgiveness isn’t about forgetting or erasing. According to Dr. Kristin Neff’s work on self-compassion, people who respond to their own failures with kindness instead of criticism experience better emotional resilience and healthier motivation.¹

That’s the energy I’m carrying into this. Not a relaunch. Not a reinvention.
Just a continuation — with a little more honesty.

This isn’t a polished blog. There are no 5-step guides here. Some days, the thoughts will be clear. Other days, they might arrive jagged and half-formed. But they’ll always be mine.

We all are, even if we’re just trying to start again.
